Rocki Evans – Fantastic

Rocki Evans

I’m feeling nice today, so I’ll spare you the “Who’s on first?” routine (just this once, though), so let’s just say that this new single, the first Booth feature from up-and-coming singer Rocki Evans, is titledFantastic,” is pretty fantastic excellent. The latest entry in the “unusually upbeat breakup joint” R&B subgenre, this cut finds production/songwriting duo Lady and a Tramp pairing a compulsively head-noddable swung percussion rhythm with a chopped sample from Jackson 5 classic I Want You Back as the up-and-comer, ironically enough, informs an ex that he doesn’t want her back – as it turns out, life without her is just fine, thank-you-very-much. Topped off with a few rapped bars from Kanye West (originally found on Brandy’s Talk About Our Love), the record has an undeniably catchy vibe, but is it truly, um, superb? If you think so, you’ll be able to hear Fantastic and plenty more songs about girls on Rocki Evans’ aptly-named More Songs About Girls LP, due out next Tuesday, April 6.

Charles Hamilton & B.o.B – Paperboy

Charles Hamilton

Incredibly, it’s becoming cool to be a nerd in America. From oversized black glasses to spending hours gaming and reading comic books, nerdom is slowly but surely becoming something to be proud of instead of a hobby you need to keep as secret as your Pokemon collection (still need to take your lady out once in awhile, Urkel). The new generation of hip hop artists are at the forefront of this movement, as shown by Paperboy, the latest track from self-proclaimed nerds B.o.B. and Charles Hamilton. Using the theme of the classic Nintendo game with the same title as their starting point, the former XXL Freshmen don’t hold anything back, with both producing (along with Woody and bass by Kato) in addition to manning the mics. Lyrically both artists show their talents as they use their creativity to compare themselves to everything from the “top of a capital A” and the D List’s Kathy Griffin. So far the collaboration is just for kicks, but if it morphs into something bigger you’ll know where to find out first. Nerds unite!
