Miami Beat Wave ft. Dead Prez – This is Life [Premiere]
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
There are plenty of hip-hop artists who can be counted on to create high-quality tunes packed with lyrical insight, but truly mind-expanding records are few and far between. If you’ve been craving something a little (or a lot) deeper than your average rap joint, This Is Life, the latest single and solo Booth debut from Miami Beat Wave, should fit the bill perfectly. Making its world premiere right here in the Booth, this track finds the Floridian production trio blending spacey guitar riffs, vocal samples and synth ambiance into an eminently headphone-worthy backdrop for the existential ponderings of two of hip-hop’s most revolutionary thinkers; M1 and Stic.Man of iconic duo dead prez handle mic duties, delivering some of the most thought-provoking bars I’ve heard in a minute. As multilayered as their lyrical blend of spirituality, social commentary and poetry can be, though, the overarching message could hardly be simpler or more practical: “If you’ve done your best, you’ll have no regrets.” This consciousness-raising jam and much more can be found on MBW’s Slight Modification LP, scheduled, to hit our homepage in late summer.
Phil Adé – My Story [Premiere]
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
I have no doubt that if I wrote “my story,” not only would it become a New York Times best-seller, it would have everyone wondering how I could have possibly emerged triumphant in spite of the injustices I’ve faced (having a hair in my soup at restaurants, not being able to find a parking space, etc.) Ok, fine. I can admit that Phil Adé’s story is much more interesting (seeing as how I’m not a rapper and all), and on his latest leak, My Story, making its worldwide premiere right here right now, we’re offered a snippet of his life – high school kid to rising star emcee. Team Demo’s light sprinkles of guitar and murmuring instrumentals, while having the potential to become the personal theme music of a private investigator, fits Ade perfectly, and as he tap-dances over the beat with two very satisfying verses, we’re only left wanting more. Fortunately, Phil Ade’s DJBooth.net-hosted album The Letterman drops next Tuesday, so if My Story only makes your hungrier for some good music, don’t worry. You’re gonna have a full stomach pretty soon.
