Laws & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble ft. Dave Young – Never

Never

Everything’s better when backed by a live band. Everything. Even sex. Did I say that out loud? The point is, DJBooth Freestyle Alum and day job quitter Laws has stepped back in the Booth, and this time he’s rolling deep with The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a nine piece, Chicago based horn crew that are becomingly an increasingly large part of the hip-hop scene. On their new collaborative record Never, also featuring a smooth hook from singer Dave Young, Laws uses the…well…hypnotically dope production and instrumentation laid down by the Brass Ensemble to tell the story of his rise through the rap ranks, and the quasi friends he had to leave behind along the way, “Told my crew…I’m goin to the battle now / they said are you f**king crazy? / that’s when I knew…we’d never be closer than handshakes.” Don’t worry Laws, you’ve got a friend in the Booth, and we completely support your battle rhyming desires. While Never isn’t currently attached to any project, fans should keep an ear out for Laws’ upcoming, Paul McCartney inspired (yeah, seriously) mixtape, coming soon.

The Canz ft. El Prez & Aleon Craft – Ferris Bueller (Personal Day Off)

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Ferris Bueller (Personal Day Off)

“When Cameron was in Egypt’s land, let me Cameron go.” You’ll have to excuse me, I just see a title like Ferris Bueller (Personal Day Off) and instinctively start quoting the most rewatchable movie of my childhood (‘80s babies stand up!). Luckily Slow Risers The Canz’ new record does a lot more than just allow me to quote one of my favorite movies, it’s also provided me with something new to bump in my iPod. Playing hooky but putting in some work on Bueller behind the boards is producer Marcoticks, who crafts exactly the kind of relaxed beat Canz emcees Prominent and Foster need to tell their boss to lyrically shove it, sentiments more than capably echoed by guest rappers Aleon Craft and El Prez. Looking for more inspiration to quit your crappy job? You’re in luck. The Canz’ sequel mixtape The Slow Rise II is dropping on this very site soon-ish, and you can of course see them live, alongside Crooked I, Evidence, !Mayday! and many more, at DJBooth’s A3C showcase on October 8. Feel free to ditch work and show up.
